i am at an airport in orlando. i'm supposed to be in the airplane that left a couple hours ago but the florida highway department neglected to post that the turnpike taking poets to the airport would be closed for a small stretch, creating a 20 mile driveinto 1 hour and 45 minutes...so my show of 3,000 kids at this conference in peoria, illinois will be going on without me until i arrive too late to perform this evening. i will be able to do the seminars in the morning but it's always exciting to jam out in front of so many kids. oh well. it's all good.

...

tour is great. some shows are a bit weird because we might be playing with 6 metal and grindcore bands with names like "massacre of the umbilical chord" but ya know, we do what we do regardless.

...

so we've had 3 near death experiences thus far, all of which occured in the middle of the night/early morning:
one. hitting a deer on the interstate in wisconsin. "deer!"
two. crazy new york drivers and abrupt lane endings, twice in one night with rain. "bleep bleep bleep!"
three. a greyhound bus nearly pushing us over the edge of a hundred foot plus tall bridge. "dude!"

among fears i have in life like being rejected, unloved, and serious things such as that, i do fear dying in a blazing glory on the interstate. when you drive as much as i do you see how dangerous driving so fast so often is so dangerous. the fear hasn't impaired my life in anyway...it's not like someone afraid of spiders or something...it's just a persistant reality/fear that looms as i lay down in the backseat and awakens when i feel the brakes slam and the driver yelling cuss words. or when i see a driver drift into the lane. or pass a brutal wreck. i would like to go very fast and not be dragged and have my legs severed or fly through the window and end up across 3 lanes of speeding traffic. "death, be swift and final."

...

apparently the orlando airport police wear short shorts.

I drove to the grand canyon from oklahoma a few weeks ago, I'm pretty sure we almost crashed about 20 times. I was most afriad of hitting an elk because they are the size of horses.

Same thing happened to me in TX.  Not only  are they the most horribly aggressive drivers, I ended up in bumper to bumper stand-still traffic for about an hour and then missed the turn off to the airport because it was blocked by construction.  No signs pointing me in the right direction or anything.  I ended up calling the airport and they directed me, but I was still incredibly late.  Fortunately, my flight had actually been delayed, so I still got on it.  Phew. That's that's the last time I drive myself to the airport in an unfamiliar state...by myself.  I'll take a cab or the bus or something.

Hope everything goes well in your seminars!

hi bradley...i saw you in conway... thanks again for the CD. been listening to it lots and lots (i think my new neighbors hate me....uh, but not because it's bad or anything...but just because i'm loud...you know)

my fiance and i were just blessed to meet you...he said, "i love that guy." which is hilarious because the first time i played your stuff to him he looked at me like i was crazy. i knew he'd come around.

so excited that you'll be here in the Houston area this upcoming wednesday!

The Great Gatsby is a very good book!

you've kinda been an influence in my poetry lately. when i finish writing... i always read my stuff outloud to make sure it makes sense. a few of my poems have a Bradley Hathaway-esque tone to it. and i  know i'm not crazy because i let my mother read and hear one of the poems and she said that it reminded her of your poetry without me mentioning it.

Who was that said, "We live three feet from death"?  (Maybe it was the head of DOT...)

haha. crazy airport policeman. geez. i hope you got to peoria alright, eventually. even if you didn't get to perform last night. i'm pretty sure i'm much more scared of lightening hitting the airplane, or surviving a crash in the Rockies or something where no one would find me for days. ANYways, enjoy the rest of the tour, safe travels and i'll be seeing you again soon, hoorah. so long.

in regards to momentum convention--

we wondered what happened to you when we saw your name on the schedule for friday and no one told us what became of you. again, many thanks from my friend Emily and I for Silence.

everything was really excellent in seminars. i would like to again thank you for giving me a kick in the face intellectually. although i'd have to say one of the best parts was the poetry slam in the middle of the two clinics.

also, the new record is intense. i am enjoying it a lot.

continuing our discussion of Fitzgerald, what exactly was it about Gatsby that you didnt like? ...i usually really enjoy him.

here's to safe-keeping in the air and on the road---  Shelby Devitt, Illinoisan.

I am from Illinois & I went to those conferences as a teen...and ten years later I hear you for the first time and I think to myself, it would be really cool to be at that conference...it's ok if you're late. I mean, I know it's already over but it's ok...
